Chocolate Chess Pie is a classic Southern dessert that has been enjoyed in many home for many years. It is a rich chocolate pie with a sugary crunchy crust and a gooey fudge-like filling.
This chocolate chess pie recipe is easy to make with only a few simple ingredients.

"Great chess pie! It's delicious and super easy to make! It's first chocolate chess I have ever made that actually has the crust on top. I love it!"
★★★★★-Melissa
Whenever I am in a pickle and need an easy dessert, I whip up this chocolate chess pie or my French Coconut Pie. I have made both for years.
The chocolate chess pie remains one of my husband's favorite desserts since the time we started dating. On special occasions, we would dine at the famous Angus Barn, and this chocolate dessert is a signature item listed on the dessert menu. He loved it so much, I had to learn to make it at home.
Not counting the baking time, it can be put together in under 10 minutes. There is little fuss in the construction, and ALWAYS a perfectly cooked pie as a result.
I hope you love it as much as my husband does. Enjoy! Xoxo ~Katie.

Ingredients and substitutions
You will need the following ingredients to make chocolate chess pie.
- sugar
- 9 inch unbaked, pre-made pie crust- To keep this pie simple, I use a prepared pie crust. However, Live Well Bake Often has a great homemade pie crust recipe if you would like to make one from scratch.
- semi sweet chocolate baking bars-This is a sweet chocolate pie. If you want it a little less sweet, you can substitute with unsweetened chocolate baking bars
- vanilla extract
- large eggs

Do you need to refrigerate Chocolate Chess Pie?
If covered and wrapped in saran wrap, you can leave out your pie at room temperature up to 3 days. However, after you slice it, you will need to cover and wrap the pie, and store in the refrigerator.
Chocolate Chess Pie is best served at room temperature. If you store it in the refrigerator, set out to room temperature for about 30 minutes to warm before serving.
Can you freeze chess pie?
You can freeze chess pie. To freeze:
- Cook pie according to directions.
- Completely cool.
- Wrap it in saran wrap really well and seal it air tight.
- Then freeze.
Thaw it completely before serving. It is best served at room temperature. Once thawed, leave it out 30 minutes to warm to room temperature before serving.

What kind of chocolate bars should you use?
Use good quality chocolate baking bars! The chocolate is the star ingredient in this recipe.
While it will still be delicious with the common Baker's Bar Chocolate or a generic brand of chocolate, a finer quality chocolate will make it INCREDIBLE!
I personally LOVE, LOVE, LOVE using Ghiradelli chocolate baking bars. They have never failed me and return a brilliant rich chocolate flavor every time.
