"Made as written, adding sautéed mushrooms and worcestershire sauce. It's literally the best rice I've ever had. My picky six year old not only said the same, but was actually eating the mushrooms! This will go on rotation from now on. Thanks for sharing!"

    ★★★★★-Amy

Stick of butter rice is a popular side dish in the South.

It is also called "Southern Brown Rice, Church Lady Rice, Beef Consommé Rice, French Onion Rice, and French Onion Baked Rice."

Because it uses an entire stick of butter, we called it "Stick of Butter Rice."

The beef and butter flavors make the rice rich and creamy. The baked rice pairs perfectly with chicken, pork, or beef. It is delicious side dish for potlucks, cookouts, holiday dinners, and family dinners.

My friends and family go crazy over this recipe. I hope you love it as much as we do! Enjoy! Xoxo ~Katie.

Ingredients for Stick of Butter Rice-white rice, butter, French onion soup, beef consommé

    Ingredient notes and substitutions

You will need the following ingredients to make stick of butter rice.

    • white rice- Do not use brown rice or Instant rice.
    • French Onion soup-Use condensed canned French onion soup. Do not substitute with the dry onion soup mix. If you don't like onions, substitute with additional beef consommé.
    • Beef Consommé soup- Beef consommé soup is thicker and richer than beef broth. You can substitute with beef broth, but I recommend using the consommé.
    • butter- Use the whole stick of butter, do not skimp! Do not substitute with margarine.

(*Note-Full recipe with complete ingredient measurements are in the recipe card at the end of the post.)

    Add-ins & variations

I think this recip is perfect the way it is. However, here are some variations you can try.

    • Add 1 pound of cooked ground beef and cook according to directions to make it a rice casserole meal.
    • Mix in sliced mushrooms.
    • Add 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce for an extra kick of flavor.
    • Add cooked ground breakfast sausage and drained pinto beans, then cook according to directions for a Cajun inspired dinner.
Spoonful of stick of butter rice

    Low sodium option

If you are watching your salt intake, use low sodium or no sodium soups and unsalted butter.

I have used a mix of brown and wild rice it’s excellent results. Increase cook time 15 minutes.

Love recipe as is, but wanted to make it Gluten free. Would beef broth work verses Consommé?

Hi Lori! Yes, beef broth will work. Beef consommé has a richer flavor, but the beef broth will still be good. I hope you enjoy!

Why not brown rice or instant rice?

It will not cook the same way, and the flavors and texture will be very different than using plain white rice.

Can you use Jasmine rice instead of white rice?

I have never used Jasmine rice in this. I think it might add a hint of sweetness, otherwise, I don't know why it would not come out good. But honestly have not tried it to know for sure. If you use it, let me know how it turns out.

Wow, this was great. Made it with no changes. Before was afraid of non minute/rice a roni rice. This will be my go to. I prefer my rice this texture. But the crunchy bits on the bottom of my not very well greased dish was yummy as well. This is such a great base I will try with other soups and add ins.
      Thank you
