mashed potatoes in a slow cooker

"I made these for Thanksgiving & again today. I have attempted to make homemade mashed potatoes a couple of other times, and they turned out gummy. This crockpot version is creamy and delicious."

    ★★★★★-Stacy

Crockpot mashed potatoes are equally delicious as the stove-top version. They turn out buttery, rich, and creamy.

Cooking potatoes in the slow cooker frees up stove space. This is especially important when cooking a big meal for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter when the stove space is essential to other dishes.

You can also make them ahead of time and turn on the warm setting. This will free up your cooking schedule and provide flexibility to focus on other dishes.

I hope you love them as much as we do! Enjoy! Xoxo ~Katie.

slow cooker mashed potatoes ingredients-Yukon Gold potatoes, butter, heavy whipping cream, salt, chicken broth

    Ingredient notes and substitutions

You will need the following ingredients to make creamy slow cooker mashed potatoes.

    • Yukon Gold Potatoes- Yukon Gold potatoes are perfect for cooking mashed potatoes in the crockpot because they are naturally buttery and creamy. They also do not absorb liquid as much as other potatoes, preventing them from becoming overcooked and mushy. Russet potatoes are another great choice for creamy potatoes, however they absorb liquid easier, and can become mushy if overcooked. If you choose Russet potatoes, keep a careful watch on them as they cooked to prevent overcooking. Red potatoes are also tasty, however they can become gluey if over-mashed.
    • chicken broth- Chicken broth adds flavor. You can substitute with water.
    • salt
    • butter-Use real butter. Do not substitute with margarine. You can use salted or unsalted butter.
    • heavy whipping cream- Heavy whipping cream creates the reach, smooth, creamy texture. You can substitute with half and half or whole milk. However, they will not be as rich and creamy.

Steps to make crockpot mashed potatoes.

    Steps

Follow these simple steps to make crockpot mashed potatoes.

    1. Peel Yukon Gold potatoes and cut into quarters.
    2. Add potatoes in the slow cooker. Add chicken broth and salt. Cook on high 2 ½ to 3 hours or low 4 to 5 hours. Cooking time will vary depending on your slow cooker. Check potatoes periodically. Potatoes should be cooked through and fork tender.
    3. Remove the lid. If there is any remaining broth at the bottom of the crockpot, carefully drain the liquid. Add butter and heavy cream.
    4. Mash the potatoes with an electric mixer or potato masher until lumps are gone and potatoes are rich and creamy. Salt and pepper to taste.

    Watch how to make

    Warming tip

Potatoes can be served immediately or kept in the slow cooker with the lid on warm setting for up to 4 hours. You may need to mix them periodically. If they begin to dry out, add a dash of heavy cream or milk.

    Mashed Potatoes Mix-Ins

This is a traditional home-style mashed potatoes recipe that turns out perfectly delicious. However, feel free to add any of these mix-ins for different twist.

    • shredded cheddar cheese, shredded parmesan cheese, or crumbled gorgonzola
    • chopped green onions or chives
    • roasted garlic
    • sour cream
    • crispy crumbled bacon

    How do you store leftovers?

Mashed potatoes can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

You can reheat leftovers in the microwave, stove top, or slow cooker.

While you can freeze leftovers, it is not recommended. The texture will become mushy and watery when reheating.

    Dinner ideas!

Try serving these mashed potatoes with Swedish Meatballs, Sriracha Pineapple Ham, Standing Rib Roast, Country Style Steak, Salisbury Hamburger, or Turkey for an incredible home cooked meal!

These were the easiest mashed potatoes. After mashing, I topped with cheddar cheese and added back the lid for 10 minutes. Once the cheese melted, I topped with bacon bits.Delicious!
