This is a restaurant review for The Pik-N-Pig barbecue restaurant in Carthage, North Carolina.
The legendary Pik-N-Pig barbecue restaurant is located in the small town of Carthage in North Carolina at the Gilliam McConnell Airport. People "Fly-in" from all over to dine on old school pulled pork, barbecue ribs, smoked chicken, and tasty southern sides. Not an aviator? Don't worry, the PiK-N-Pig has a huge parking lot for those who prefer to drive-in on land for some tasty southern grub!
Being a barbecue lover, I have had this idea of doing a barbecue tour along the North Carolina State. I had been to the famous B's Barbecue in Greenville, NC and loved it. I had been hearing a lot of buzz about The Pik-N-Pig from my friends and have been told several times that I needed to check it out. I took my family on a Sunday afternoon to see what all the fuss was about.
Here is my video.... Keep reading for the whole story!
If you like antiques, you will enjoy the drive as you navigate through the charming town of Carthage. There are several antique stores to keep you busy with shopping on your way to the Pic-N-Pig.
I pulled up to a gravel parking lot packed with cars that was along side of a little airport. I was able to watch a small plane fly out when we pulled in, but I didn't have my camera ready to catch it.
You can dine inside or outside on the patio and watch the planes.
The Menu includes appetizers such as: smoked wings and fried pickles. They have a variety of sandwiches such as: Pulled Pork Sandwich, Pork Chop Sandwich, BBQ Chicken Sandwich, BBQ Brisket Sandwich, Janie Sandwich (A pik-n-pig original! Thin sliced, lightly seasoned, hickory smoked pork loin topped with honey Q, then smothered with swiss and cheddar.) Hotdog, and a Fried, Grilled, or Spicy Chicken Sandwich.
For the hungry, they serve plates such as Pulled Pork, BBQ Brisket, Pork Chop, Smoked Chicken, BBQ Sundae (Pulled pork then baked beans and topped with cole slaw in a mason jar.)
Most importantly, they have a huge combo platter meant for sharing. That is what we ordered. We had the delicious Smoked Chicken, BBQ Brisket, and pulled pork platter. The jalapeno butter that comes with the homemade hush puppies was INCREDIBLE!
This is the Brisket Platter that our cousin ordered.
Barbecue is never finished without a signature sauce. Pic-N-Pig makes there own version set at every table. They have a sweet and tangy Honey Barbecue, and my favorite, the Spicy Vinegar Sauce.
We couldn't leave without a southern dessert. We ordered the Hot Fudge Cake and the Banana Pudding(It kinda got all ate before I could snap a picture. OOPS!) They were pretty good!
Venture out and visit the Pic-N-Pig for a great experience and good food! Tell them I sent you. You will have a great experience! Happy Eating!
If you want to make your own vinegar based barbecue, check out my Carolina Barbecue Sauce. You will love it!
Stay tuned for future NC Barbecue Stories! xoxo
