Milk Bar Cakes are cleverly creative cakes with different layers of textures and flavors that combine to create bites of magic inside your mouth! In this post, I do a review of the Milk Bar Birthday Cake and Milk Bar Chocolate Malt Cake.
The Milk Bar Store.... have you heard of it? Famous chef Christina Tosi opened its first doors in New York City which is no where close to my home town here in Fayetteville, NC. However, it was in Fayetteville, NC that I was able to have my first slice of Milk Bar cake!
The first time I encountered a brilliant Milk Bar cake was at a friend's house. My friend Laura Novotny's husband was being promoted and she threw him an AMAZING celebration party. She also handmade a Milk Bar Birthday Cake. I was fascinated by the look of it. The Milk Bar Birthday Cake was so different than a traditional birthday cake. It had so many layers... The frosting didn't completely cover the cake... It was so colorful... I wondered to myself, "What will this cake taste like?" Followed by, "I can't wait to try it!"
After one bite, I was hooked! I could not believe that Laura made the cake herself. There are several layers of cake requiring to be individually made. Milk Bar actually shares several of their recipes on line for free. While I absolutely fell in love with the cake, I am much too lazy of a baker to make ALL OF THOSE labor intensive LAYERS!!! Thankfully you can order a Milk Bar Cake online!! And so, that is exactly what I did!
Milk Bar Birthday Cake
When you order a Milk Bar Cake, it comes carefully wrapped and insulated with freezer packs in a cooler. You can store it in the fridge for up to 7 days (taking it out an hour before serving), or in the freezer for 30 days (taking it out 3-4 hours before). I ordered the Milk Bar Birthday Cake because I knew for sure that it was AMAZING! I also ordered the Milk Bar Chocolate Malt Bar Cake because I love chocolate and wanted to also try something new.
This is how the cakes looked when they came out of the box. They are securely wrapped and protected.
I ordered the two cakes as a special surprise for a dinner party that would be 3 days later. Therefore, I stored them in my refrigerator until I was ready to serve them for the dinner party.
*UPDATE*: I apparently unwrapped the cakes upside down. Each side has a card board cover top. I unpacked them how they came out of the box. I had no idea I was doing it wrong... but had I known better, the top would have had a pretty layer of cookie crumbs! Whoops! None the less, the cake tasted extraordinary upside down or right side up!
Because the cakes were shipped from such a distance and came frozen, I was curious to see how they would compare to the homemade fresh cake that my friend talentedly put together. I was not disappointed in any way.
I am very serious about my cakes and think cakes should always be special. The Milk Bar Birthday Cake is INDEED SPECIAL! The Milk Bar Birthday Cake is made of layers of "funfetti" sprinkled cake soaked in a vanilla milk soak (this is what keeps that cake so moist), creamy rich frosting, and buttery, crunchy cookie crumbles. Every bite is condensed with sweet dreamy flavor combined with soft and crunchy textures. The result is a birthday party in your mouth! YUM! It is absolutely DELICIOUS! So far, this is my favorite.
Milk Bar Chocolate Malt Cake
Are you a chocolate lover? If you are, this is your kind of cake! The Milk Bar Chocolate Malt Cake is a chocolate cake with malted fudge, malted milk crumbs, charred marshmallows, and malted chocolate frosting! One of my biggest hesitancy for purchasing chocolate cakes is that they are typically dry. This one is not. The Milk Bar Chocolate Malt Cake has a layer of "ovaltine soak" that keeps it very moist. Each cake bite offers a gooey, crunchy, rich, decadent chocolatey fudge flavor. The cake is truly a chocolate sensation in your mouth. If you can't get enough of chocolate, then this is the cake for you!
Here is the video review of my Milk Bar Cakes:
I was very impressed with the Milk Bar Cakes. I definitely would order them again. I think the price was very fair. If you purchased all of the ingredients required to make the cake, you probably wouldn't save much in making it yourself. However, you would save yourself a lot of time and effort. Also, even though it looks small, a little slice of cake goes a long way. I ordered 6 inch cakes and the two cakes together fed a large group of people. Next time I would love to try the Strawberry Lemon Cake and the Popcorn Cake. They both look fun!
If you end up trying the Milk Bar Cakes, let me know. I would love to hear how you liked them. Also, if you end up making one yourself, tell me how it went. I have no desire to put forth that kind of effort, but I would love to hear if your cake turned out as good as the Milk Bar Store's cakes!
