There's just something about a large pot of creamy chicken and noodles simmering on the stove that feels like home. This old-fashioned recipe is made with frozen homestyle egg noodles in a rich, savory sauce. It is thick and comforting, not soupy, and exactly what you want when you're craving a stick to your ribs kind of dinner.

    A note to the reader

The way to my husband's heart is a good meal on the dinner table and this is one of his favorites. He loves comforting, old-fashioned chicken noodles. If I set a bowl of this in front of him, I can guarantee that no matter what kind of mood he started in, he'll end it happy. And honestly you probably will too.

It's just one of those kind of meals. The noodles that taste homemade, the creamy chicken sauce is full of simple, rich flavor, and the whole dish is hearty and satisfying. It's the kind of meal that leaves you full, content, and ready to settle in for the evening. And if you ask me, it's perfect for a good Sunday dinner too! Enjoy. Xoxo - Katie.

Homestyle Creamy Chicken and Noodles ingredients- chicken, celery, frozen homestyle egg noodles, butter, chicken broth, carrots, onion, cream of celery soup, cream of chicken soup, chicken bouillon

    Ingredient notes and substitutions

You will need the following ingredients to make homestyle creamy chicken and noodles.

    • chicken- I use chicken breasts, but you can use any cut of chicken you prefer, including thighs. Rotisserie chicken works great for a quick shortcut.
    • celery, carrots, and onions- This combination adds the old-fashioned, homestyle taste.
    • chicken broth- You can also use chicken stock or bone broth. Choose low sodium if you want more control over the salt.
    • chicken bouillon- I recommend Better Than Bouillon for best flavor, however, any chicken bouillon will work. This adds a deeper, richer chicken flavor.
    • frozen homestyle egg noodles- I use Reames brand, but any frozen homestyle egg noodles will work. If you cannot find them in your grocery store, Walmart typically carries them in their frozen isle. If you have the time, you can also make homemade noodles! I do not recommend dried egg noodles for this recipe, as they require different liquid amounts and cooking time. The current measurements would turn the dried egg noodles soggy.
    • cream of celery soup- Adds a savory base to the creamy sauce. You can swap out with another can of cream of chicken or cream of mushroom soup.
    • cream of chicken- This adds another layer of rich chicken flavor. However, you can swap out with another can of cream of celery soup if needed.
    • butter- Use salted or unsalted butter to add richness and help create the creamy texture.

Steps to make Homestyle Creamy Chicken and Noodles

    Steps

Follow these simple steps to make old-fashioned creamy chicken and noodles.

    1. Sauté the vegetables - In a large heavy bottomed pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add diced onion, celery, and carrots. Cook until softened.
    2. Cook the chicken - Add the chicken broth, chicken bouillon, and chicken breasts. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium and cook for about 15 minutes or when chicken is fully cooked. Remove the chicken from the broth and set aside.
    3. Cook the noodles - Add frozen homestyle egg noodles to the broth and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium and cook for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. While the noodles cook, shred the chicken.
    4. Make it creamy - After the noodles have cooked for 25 minutes, stir in the remaining butter, cream of chicken canned soup, and cream of celery soup with the noodles until well combined. Add the shredded chicken and simmer for an additional 10 minutes.
    5. Let it rest - Remove from heat and let it rest 10 minutes before serving. The sauce will continue to thicken as it sits.

    Cooking Tips

    • Don't rush the noodles. Let them simmer long enough to release the starch.
    • In a hurry? Use rotisserie chicken.
    • Adjust the thickness in the end. Too thick? Add a splash of broth. Too thin? Simmer a little longer.

Why are my chicken and noodles soupy?

This usually means there is too much liquid or the noodles haven't cooked long enough. Frozen homestyle egg noodles release starch as they cook, which naturally thickens the sauce. Let the noodles simmer longer or allow them to rest before serving.

Can I make chicken and noodles ahead of time?

Yes. This old-fashioned chicken and noodles reheats well. However, it thickens as it sits. You may need to add a little chicken broth when reheating to loosen up the sauce.
