There are diners… and then there are dives… This my friend was a dive. A good dive. But a dive.
Where do I begin? We were on the way to Florida on I95 when lunch time was fast approaching. We were starving. I pulled out my handy dandy iPhone and looked up the nearest restaurants on Urban Spoon. Captain Stan’s Smokehouse had a lot of mixed reviews, good out weighing the bad, so we decided to take a chance. It was in the middle of no where, in a small town called Woodbine, in Georgia. It wasn’t too difficult to navigate to from off the highway.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when we pulled in on the grass and gravel parking lot. It was a true shack decorated in an eclectic, amusing, chaotic sort of way. My daughter exclaimed,” Oh no. Please don’t tell me this is the place.” My son said, “Wow, this is cool.” You could smell the meat being smoked in the back on the grill, so hunger ruled out.
The inside was packed, so we walked out back passing a mermaid, to the outside seating of picnic benches, a dirt floor, and a parachute roof. A boar’s head was eyeing us as we waited for the waitress.
Rumor has it that Captain Stan hunted the boar himself, but I have not confirmed this. The waitress took a little while to get to us. I read on one review that service was slow… Well, she wasn’t in a hurry. But she was friendly and after she took our order, food and drinks did not take long to arrive.
The first thing I will warn you about is the water. DO NOT DRINK THE WATER. It was a rather warm day that day, and my son, daughter, and I ordered water, and my husband ordered unsweetened tea. My son, daughter, and I simultaneously took a sip of the water and we simultaneously almost spit it out. We all made faces and said, “This is awful!” It wasn’t Georgia’s finest water. The tea was okay. But it was made with that not so good water, so there was still an off taste to it. Your best bet at Captain Stan’s is to get a soda, beer, or a mixed drink. The bar looked really cool and what I could see from other people’s drinks, the mixed drinks looked pretty good. My husband and I were driving, so there was no alcoholic beverages for us.
After drinking the water, we were questioning our sanity for staying. Just when we seriously were thinking about making a mad dash out the outside… The waitress came around the corner with our food. And the food folks, is why you would come to Captain Stan’s. He really does smoke his meat on his own grill and it was pretty darn good. My recommendation is to get the ribs. They were the best. The wings had a different seasoning than what you would normally associate seasoning the smoked wings with. Maybe oregano? Not sure. My daughter did not like them. My husband, son, and I thought they were pretty good. Just different. But the ribs, my friends, were the winner. They were a solid YUM. And they give you a big plate of them, so BEWARE! You might want to split an order of the Ribs and stock up on some of those good country sides.
I read at night they have live music with great bands. Captain Stan also builds a fire in the fire pit where he sometimes comes out and tells stories. Ask him about the Boar’s Head. Also ask him about the Buffalo head on the tree. I am curious. Kids can do s’mores on the fire. Sounds like fun to me. Go check out Captain Stan’s Smokehouse. It will be adventure. It will be fun. It will give you something to talk about. And you will leave with a full belly.
And when you like it, I told you so!
