Amish buttered noodles are egg noodles cooked in a creamy chicken broth with brown butter. The noodles absorb the rich buttery broth flavors creating a mouthwatering side dish even picky eaters will love.
Make this easy dish with only 5 inexpensive simple ingredients.

Have you heard of the viral Tik Tok cafeteria noodles? When I watched the video, I thought to myself, "Those are what we called 'Amish Buttered Noodles' growing up."
We didn't always add cream of chicken soup. This would depend if we had the soup on hand or not. However, adding the cream of chicken soup does make the sauce creamier and thicker.
Browning the butter is something I learned about as an adult. I found that browning the butter dials up the flavoring by adding an additional rich nutty caramel flavor.
Brown butter is delicious in sweet dishes such as my banana bread brownies with brown buttered frosting and in savory dishes such as this noodle dish! I hope you love it as much as we do! Enjoy! Xoxo ~Katie.

Ingredients notes and substitutions
You will need the following basic ingredients to make this Amish buttered noodles recipe.
- egg noodles- Any variety of your favorite egg noodles will work for this recipe with the exception of frozen egg noodles. The dry egg noodles soak up all of the broth and seasonings when cooking. The frozen egg noodles will not soak up the liquids the same way. I prefer the wide egg noodles over the extra wide egg noodles, but that is a personal preference only. If you have some extra time, you can make homemade egg noodles from scratch!
- chicken broth/chicken stock- Chicken broth or chicken stock gives the noodles loads of flavor. However, if you do not have chicken broth you can substitute with water and add more chicken bouillon.
- chicken bouillon-This adds tons of flavor and replaces salt. If you omit the added chicken bouillon, you will need to add a little salt. For the best flavor, I recommend the "Better than Bouillon" brand instead of the chicken bouillon cube.
- cream of chicken soup- Cream of chicken soup works best for this recipe but you can substitute with cream of mushroom soup, cream of onion soup, or cream of celery soup.
- unsalted butter- I recommend unsalted butter for this recipe because the chicken stock and chicken bouillon adds a lot of salt flavor. However, if you only have salted butter on hand, you can use salted butter. If you do, you may want to use less chicken bouillon or a low sodium chicken broth. Some recipes call for a whole stick of butter. I find that a half stick of butter adds plenty of rich buttery flavor.
Top Tip
The Amish buttered noodles are incredible served as is. However, for a splash of color or additional flavor, add finely chopped chives or fresh parsley. Shredded parmesan cheese would also be a delicious topping. For a one-pot meal, you can add shredded chicken.

Steps
Follow these simple steps to make Amish noodles with brown butter.
- In a dutch oven or large pot add butter. Cook on medium heat stirring continuously until butter reaches a golden brown (about 5 minutes.)
- Slowly add in chicken broth.(If you pour in too fast the broth may splatter from the heat.) Add in cream of chicken soup and chicken bouillon. Stir until completely mixed.
- Cook broth on medium high heat until it reaches a boil. Add egg noodles and boil for 2 minutes.
- Remove from heat. Cover with a lid and let sit for 30 minutes. Stir once halfway. Remove lid, stir again and serve.

Can you use regular noodles?
You cannot use regular noodles or pasta for this recipe. Regular pasta will not absorb the broth the same way. You would also need to cook the regular pasta longer on medium heat rather than having them sit for 30 minutes.

What do you serve with Amish buttered noodles?
Amish buttered noodles are a great side dish to pair with any meat such as steak, chicken, or pork chops. Any meatloafs or meatballs would also pair well with the noodles.
I personally like serving them with my Swedish Meatballs, Crockpot Chicken and Gravy, Crockpot Pepperoncini Roast, and Salisbury Hamburger.

They were good ππ» I'm not sure why I thought the would have more flavor. I added fresh cracked pepper. Both bags of noodles I had were 16oz. I hate to have partial bags of noodles open. Will make again and maybe add some other seasonings.

Super easy to pull together and did some minimal modifications - used Cream of Chicken & Herbs, added 1/4 tsp of garlic powder and 1/4 tsp of white pepper. Got raves from my super picky husband!!!
