There is a place. A place where they sell cakes. Magical cakes. Cakes where sugar becomes fairy dust, cream becomes a vessel; and the first bite into each rich slice of goodness becomes an adventure to a magical land where wishes come true, dragons are slayed, good defeats the bad, and all ends in A Happily Ever After… Your very own “Bibbity Bobbity Boo!” For your taste buds that is… What place is this? Should I tell you? After all, the more people that know about this place, the longer the line it is to get these special slices of cake. But it would be mean not to share. And so I will. It is Maxi B’s in Greensboro, NC. You are very welcome!
I try to save sugar for special occasions. I can generally pass over dessert. But there is no way I pass on an opportunity for cake at Maxi B’s.
There is always a line at Maxi B’s. While waiting in line, everyone discusses their favorite flavor. Everyone has their personal favorite that no other cake can match. These discussions turn into heavy debates that have personally gotten me in trouble. I have ended up ordering two slices of cake to see if indeed my debater was correct. After all, I was not going to skip out on my favorite cake slice, but I am open to trying new things. So somehow, the girl who often passes on desserts sometimes gets tricked into ordering two slices of cake. But only at Maxi B’s!
And have you seen the slices of cake? They are not small slices of cake. They are large, thick, three layer slices of cake. For shame… But, what evs. Don’t judge.
My sweet sister-in law, Melanie, lives in Greensboro. She told my husband, his parents, and I about a bakery that had the BEST slices of cake that we had to try. At the time, my husband and I had sworn off all sugar and were participating in a low carb diet. We all went to Maxi B’s and I was only going to have coffee and Paul was only going to have an unsweet tea, while everyone else had cake.
My mother-in-law ordered two extra slices of different flavors “in case we changed our minds.” It was a very naughty nice thing to do. Paul and I just sat there while they Oooed and Awed over their cake. I was thinking to myself,”I have had the church ladies’ cakes. There is no way a bakery is going to be better than the sweet little ladies’ made-from-scratch moist cakes.” So I sat smug, watching them eat the cake, and sipping my coffee.
Then my husband broke down and took a bite. He said, “Oh my gosh.” And that was it. I watched his eyes light up, and go for second bites. My will power broke. I thought, “Well, I will just have one bite.” Ha! There is no “one” bite with a Maxi B cake. I dare anyone to challenge me. It is physically impossible. I don’t know how it happened or what took over us. My husband and I devoured the two slices and left nothing behind. Everyone else had left overs because the slices are so big. Us, “non-cake eaters,” had clean plates, while the rest of the family had to-go boxes. Again. For shame. Don’t judge.
My favorite cake slice is the Fresh Strawberry Butter Cream Cake. It is a cream cheese cake; dense and moist, with fresh strawberries between each layer, and topped with the best butter cream frosting you will ever try. If I am bringing a piece of cake back for my friends in my home town, this is the slice I always choose. It is ridiculously good.
My second favorite is the Sour Cream Coconut Cake. Oh my gosh! I don’t even like coconut very much. But one of the other customers I was waiting in line with was so adamant that the Sour Cream Coconut Cake was amazing that she persuaded me to get a slice. It is wicked good.
The Dreamsicle Cake is really dreamy; literally! And the Banana Pudding Cake…. it is so heavenly! Oh, and lets not forget the Pink Lemonade Cake…
Oh wait! The Oreo Cake, All American Chocolate Cake, and the Caramel Cake… I could go on and on! They have 37 flavors to choose from daily. Remember how I said this is a place of Happily Ever Afters…?
